The U.S. Coast Guard is continuing to search for possible survivors after a boat traveling from Cuba capsized near the Florida Keys.
Two people died, 10 were missing and eight were rescued off Key West after their boat overturned.
The survivors told the U.S. Coast Guard that they left Puerto de Mariel, Cuba, on Sunday, and capsized sometime Wednesday evening. They were found 18 miles southwest of Key West, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard searched an area of about 6,552 square miles, roughly the size of Hawaii.
The eight survivors were receiving receive food, water and basic medical attention aboard a Coast Guard cutter.
“Our responders are focused on the search for survivors,” said Senior Chief Seth Haynes, Key West command center supervisor on Thursday night. “We will continue to search through the night for those reported missing, and if any mariners see or hear anything, to render assistance if possible and contact the Coast Guard.”
Assisting in the search are the U.S. Navy, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operation.
