One airman was killed and another was wounded after a shooting just outside the gates of an Air Force base in New Mexico early Saturday morning, leading the FBI and other agencies to investigate the incident.
Airman Basic Brion Teel-Scott, 27, of Bordentown, New Jersey, was fleeing “an attempted detention,” according to a Sunday news release from Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, when he was killed in a shooting and found dead at the scene just outside the base’s Truman Gate entrance.
Teel-Scott was a member of the 377th Security Forces Squadron, the base said in the news release.

“Losing a member of your team is never easy, but the circumstances of this incident make it that much harder,” Col. Michael Power, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander, said in a statement. “Additionally, we are ensuring our injured defender, the wingmen of both members, and our base community receive the best possible care and support.”
The incident happened around 2 a.m. local time. While specific details had not yet been made public, it appeared another airman was injured in the shooting and was treated.
“One airman received a nonfatal gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to [University of New Mexico] Medical Center for treatment,” a news release from the base said. “He has since been released with no life-threatening injuries.”
The identity of the wounded airman was not released publicly. The base said in a news release that the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, “in coordination with the FBI and Albuquerque Police Department, is probing the shooting.
Additionally, the base said in the news release that there was “no threat to the public.”
The incident at Kirtland follows several other shooting cases that have occurred outside of Air Force installations this past year.
In August, Air Force security guards fired back at someone who shot at the Joint Base San Antonio entrance in Texas. The following month, two men were arrested in connection to the shootings, Military.com reported.
In May, the Washington, D.C., Metro Police Department said a man and a girl were wounded in a shooting outside of Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, the police said in a social media post.
Kirtland is home to Air Force Materiel Command’s Nuclear Weapons Center, which includes the 377th Air Base Wing and the 498th Nuclear Systems Wing.
The New Mexico base is also home to the 58th Special Operations Wing, where the service trains its special operators for certain missions such as search and rescue.
